Philosophy
Over the past week, philosophy made the headlines of stories from opposite ends of the political spectrum.
First, Mitt Romney s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate sparked a debate about the extent to which Ryan is influenced by the objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand, and how he might reconcile her radical individualism and atheism with his Roman Catholicism. Although he recently told National Review that he had given up Rand in favor of Aquinas , Lisa Miller argues at The Washington Post that Ryan s budget proposal is entirely Randian in spirit, and that, while religion is, in almost every case, an inconsistent mess, the same is not true for politics, where inconsistency is a big problem.
