(CNN) - A now former senior adviser to Mitt Romney said the campaign staff was confident Election Day would end in celebration for the GOP presidential nominee.

Asked what made the difference, the adviser pointed to the Obama campaign's turnout. "They said their turnout effort would make the difference and it did."

Those claims of confidence heading into election night are consistent with the sentiments expressed by Romney to his traveling press corps aboard the then-candidate's last flight to Boston. Romney told reporters on the plane he thought he was going to prevail. He had no regrets and was proud of his campaign.

As for Romney's future, the adviser did not have much to add other than that the former Massachusetts governor is likely to spend the next several days getting some rest and spending time with his family.

There is no word on President Barack Obama's invitation to sit down with Romney and "talk about where (they) can work together to move this country forward," a sentiment Obama expressed in his victory speech.
